TIMELESS BLACK-AND-GREY TATTOOS BY DAVID ALLEN

Chicago-based tattooer David Allen worked as a graphic designer, including three or four years as art director for heavy metal music magazine, HM. His passion for drawing led him to moving on from that career to becoming a tattooer; starting an apprenticeship at Bluebird Tattoo in Indiana. Fast forward to today, he is tattooing at a private studio, Pioneer in Chicago, having built a name for himself and working in color and predominantly in black and grey. His soft-shading style is like spray-painted stencils, with sculptural figures and flowers flowing organically on the body. It is also remarkable his work on concealing Mastectomy scars, giving his clients beautiful illustrations to look at.

Humans dump more than 36 billion tons of extra carbon dioxide every year by burning fossil fuels

NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center has released a stunning video of how carbon dioxide moves across the world. The high-resolution computer model was produced by a supercomputer in 75 days. It shows plumes of the greenhouse gas entering the atmosphere from industrial centers and traveling from continent to continent. Atmospheric CO2 is one of the biggest drivers of global warming.
The computer model created by NASA scientists depicts carbon emission between May 2005 and June 2007. It revealed that the carbon dioxide emissions come primarily from the Northern Hemisphere. Huge amounts of CO2 get absorbed seasonally by plants. As the simulation moves into summer, the red plumes of the invisible gas begin to fade because the carbon dioxide is absorbed by photosynthesizing plants. With the beginning of winter, carbon dioxide concentration increases in the atmosphere as vegetation dies.
In spring 2014, atmospheric CO2 exceeded 400 parts per million for the first time in history, NASA said. Researchers have warned that carbon dioxide level above 450 parts per million will have “dangerous” consequences on climate. Before the Industrial Revolution, CO2 concentration was below 270 parts per million. But it has been increasing consistently, driven by the burning of fossil fuels.

NASA’s OCO-2 to offer new insights

NASA scientists estimate that humans worldwide dump more than 36 billion tons of extra carbon dioxide every year by burning fossil fuels. In July this year, NASA launched a new satellite called the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) to monitor carbon emissions. It will help scientists better understand what drives carbon dioxide concentrations.
The OCO-2 will also offer insights into carbon sinks such as oceans and forests that remove about 50% of all carbon emissions from the atmosphere. NASA’s computer model is part of Nature Run, a simulation that lets scientists understand how carbon dioxide builds up. It will also help scientists who want accurate climate predictions.

Sony Says Streaming Music Is the Future, With or Without Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift's withdrawal of her song catalogue from Spotify over royalty payments made some people question the future of streaming music. Not Sony.
The shift from ownership to access is a foregone conclusion for the company. In four years, streaming and subscriptions will account for 60 percent of the music industry's $8.2 billion in revenue, Sony forecasted today. That's more than triple the 18 percent now.
Where Sony and Swift agree is that people should pay for music. The popularity of free songs on services like Spotify and Pandora is the reason why streaming revenues so far have failed to offset the declines in CD sales and downloads. Sony estimates one paid subscription is worth as many as seven free music streams. For every one of Spotify's 12.5 million paid customers, four pay nothing.

Getting people to pay up is the music industry's major challenge, Michael Lynton told investors at a briefing in Tokyo. He heads Sony's entertainment business. It’s a no-brainer from the business perspective: subscriptions mean recurring, predictable revenues. It may offer a profit margin that beats those companies used to get at traditional brick-and-mortar stores, Lynton said.
“What it all really comes down to is how much value is the music company and the artist getting from the different consumption methods,” Kevin Kelleher, the chief financial officer at Sony Music, said at the briefing. “Taylor's reaction was on the advertising-supported streaming models.”
Swift, who has criticized streaming as a cause of declining album sales, didn't comment on the reason for leaving Spotify. She had already declined to give the service her new album, “1989,” the biggest release in the past two years, topping heavy hitters such as Beyonce, Coldplay and Lady Gaga.
To be sure, Swift's beef with Spotify is more than just an argument over the economics of ad-supported services. The 24-year-old musician has questioned the very practice of giving away music for free.
“Music is art, and art is important and rare,” she wrote in an op-ed on Wall Street Journal's website in July. “Important, rare things are valuable. Valuable things should be paid for.”
Spotify's Chief Executive Officer Daniel Ek defended the company, saying enticing people with free offerings is the foundation of the business model that made possible a $2 billion payout to content creators since its inception. An artist like Swift could earn more than $6 million this year, he added.
But when all is said and done, Sony has yet to start its own streaming service. It does have a stake in Vevo, a video-hosting service which offers music videos from Sony Music and Universal Music Group. Vevo’s revenue is advertisement based.

Praise Lorde: From Nirvana To Kanye West, 8 Of The Singer's Winning Cover Versions

You couldn't move last year for people covering Lorde's mega hit 'Royals'. But what about the artist herself? Lorde is a dab hand at covering a track and making it her own.
